Emirates fares...
Hi All - I've just been looking at fares for SYD-AKL for departure on June 30 and return on July 7 (or thereabouts) and found something odd in the fares - it's actually cheaper to purchase two one-way tickets instead of a return ticket ($471 vs $503.40).
Both the flights are the on the A380 and on the same day... I always thought one way intl fares were cheaper than the return simply because it was guaranteed money for the airline, has something changed?

EK one way fares to NZ are half of a return. My guess is due to the affordability of the people in country of origin being put into consideration. For example, a fare from Australia to India return is usually more expansive than India to Australia return, even though the booking classes are the same.
But consider paying the return part of the journey using NZD and adding all the charges that the bank / card issuer charge, it might not make much of a difference. Also, any cancellation or rebooking fee will needed to be paid twice.

Also consider that so many Kiwis move here long term or permanantly that return fares are probably alot less common that that route.
