A big drawer with various prints, some sorted into envelopes, a few hanging around loose, most in a big pile.

I've got about 6TB of data at home (downloading 35Gb/mth, but don't worry, 5Gb of it isn't P**n).
I've got about 300Gb of photos and file them by date using the US format (2009.02.25) to easily find what I need. Most importantly I back up the data, I duplicate my main HDD every Friday to another HDD, once per fortnight do a quick interum back up to DVD by date range & about once per quarter do a full back up to DVDs. I actually do two, I keep one spindle of DVDs in my car in case of house fire and one set in what we call a 'Fire Bag' which we keep handy with original copies of birth certificates etc (also on the DVD Bup) in it to quickly exit the house if needed. Call me paranoid, but after losing 2TB HDD last year, I will only ever lose a couple of days data now. Darren |

photo storage
After I have edited and sorted the photos, I will put them on a CD as well as an external HDD that can be turned off so the drive is not running all the time (I only turn it on when I need it). They are also on a 1TB network hard drive which is on all the time so I can still access files easily.
Once I have 4 gigs of photos, I will then burn them to DVD and make two copies, one is kept in the house and the other is in a box in the shed. |

Hi all,
I use BreezeSystems downloader pro, I plug the CF card into my reader, the software downloads all the images from my card a directory of my choice and deletes and soft ejects the CF card automatically. D:\Photos\2008\2008-12\2008-12-24\IMG_01234.jpg is what I use as a file structure. I try to back up whenever I can, usually onto DVD. Back in 2003 and 2004, I could back up an entire year onto 1 DVD, now it's a case of 1 or 2 months per DVD. Have also considered buying a 1TB external drive, or network storage solution. Does anyone know where I can take 50 or so DVD's to get them dulplicated in Perth easily? I couldn't stand copying them all myself, its boring enough backing them up once.

-2 x 1Tb hard drives in RAID1 config (mirrored) internal to PC (500Gb system drive)
-External 1Tb USB back up drive (mirror of 1 Tb RAID, backed up using Syncback, which is highly recommended) -USB Card reader in side of Dell Monitor -Transferred and keyworded using Nikon Transfer -Sorted and arranged with Nikon ViewNX -Edited in Nikon CaptureNX. -Directory named "location_date" -Files named "Airline_Rego_Location_Date_version"

Negatives (from the olden days) are stored in date order to allow easy access should I need to dig up a shot.
Digital shots are transferred from Camera to PC, sorted into folders using the date as the folder name. Once I have sufficient folders I write them to DVD. I don't back up aviation photos but I double backup pictures of the kids and keep one set off site. Although I must admit it seems like I could take a thing or two away from the way Browneye is doing things (excluding the Nikon bit ).

Following on from my earlier reply, I hope that someone can help me with a real headache I have at present.
I store all my Australian aircraft registration information in an Access Database and have a form option which includes space for an image to be embedded in the page. I first scan and save my print photos into .jpg then downsize them to 400px X 266px and save the downsized images as .bmp which I then insert into the Database page. Has been working like a dream for years with close to 1000 images inserted. However, a few months ago my old computer died and was replaced. Since then I have been unable to get the .bmp function to work properly. I still scan my photos in the usual way and downsize them and save as 400px X 266px .bmp images. But when I go to insert an image into the form, it appears as a tiny image in the space, rather than a 400px X 266px image filling the space. I've asked several people for help but none have been able to and the Help page on Access and Bitmaps doesn't seem much use (if I'm asking the right questions). Could anyone offer any suggestions please ? All that appears different is the .BMP extension for say, Westwind VH-AJG, appears as AJG.BMP - Multi Pass Viewer. The icon is blue which it never was before and I don't think "Multi Pass Viewer" was there either. Are they clues ? Any help greatly appreciated. |
