Default Did United Have A Problem Today

From the ACARS below it looks like UA0839 had a problem and returned to Sydney.

Not sure what the weather was though. Fog?

Arrived back into Sydney about 10am then departed at 5:30pm to LAX:S

If United didn't make it to Melbourne such as in this scenario, any airline really. What happens to the passengers that were meant to board that flight in Mel. Would UA fly them to Syd (being overly idealistic here) or would they just have to wait for the next days flight?
