Plane crashes on Brooker Hwy Hobart

UPDATE: A Teenage pilot miraculously walked away after crashing his plane on Hobart's Brooker Hwy today.

Patrick Humphrey, 18, a trainee pilot with the Australian Airforce was practising aerobatics when the engine stalled forcing him down on one of the state's busiest highways just after 10am.

Mr Humphrey escaped uninjured despite his plane losing a wing and landing gear when the single-engined aircraft clipped a tree as he made an emergency landing flying south into the on-coming traffic just beyond Cleary's Gates and before the clover-leaf overpass.

The plane spun out of control for 100m down the highway scattering debris, before crashing into an embankment.

Mr Humphrey's then stepped from his plane and ran down the road to stop traffic.

Witnesses said Mr Humphrey's planed circled and glided for a few minutes over New Town and Cornelian Bay after the engine had stopped before the emergency landing.

Emergency service crews described the incident as a miracle landing.

I was in CBR yesterday morning and heard the 1100 news, the plane DID crash (according to the news)

Total c.,p as far as I am concerned, I believe the guy did a great job.

Whilst I think he had a little luck on his side, he did well.

Not only did he walk away from it... he ran!

(And even directed road traffic to avoid the aircraft)

He crashed with 2 km or so of playing fields (several) the Hobart Domain & a river, so what height as as a 'trainee pilot' was he doing aeros over a built up area?

Last I remember minimum alt for any aeros without special endorsements is 3000 feet?

So not so great a job I suspect... but wrecked a nice aeroplane, if it's the one I think it is.

Just because The Mercury laud him doesn't make him an angel, but I'll wait for the official decree.
