Had nothing to do with WIND!
Mel has a sea breeze that comes in about 3pm each day, hardly go around stuff for aircrew to worry about, a change of runway thats all but not a diversion to CBR!

To be honest I have no idea what happened with regards to this, there were a few pax going on and a cabin crew so I have assumed the above, it seemed to take on a lot of fuel in Canberra as well. I am not doubting that the weather in Melbourne was fine, the BOM backs that up, I just find it interesting that Qantas gave the reason they did for the cancellation of one flight and also why Canberra had two diversions when all appeared fine. The single runway ops could be a valid reason but surely they would take extra fuel to compensate in the first place.

For those that don't know by now: Turns out it does have something to do with wind... well wind shear! This from www.heraldsun.com.au.
Melbourne Airport operating just one runway as cross winds cause havoc
