Brisbane Airport makes space for grounded aircraft

Brisbane Airport has brought forward the decommissioning of a cross runway to create additional parking space for grounded aircraft.

The move is among a number of measures undertaken to help airlines store unused planes, including creating 10 dedicated parking zones, accommodating 100 aircraft free of charge and facilitating bays being switched back on when needed.

The airport has pledged it will “keep the lights on and the front door to Queensland open” despite operating a heavily reduced service.

Chief executive Gert-Jan de Graaff said, “The cross runway was to be decommissioned in May as part of the Operational Readiness and Testing program for Brisbane’s new runway, but in these unprecedented times it was crucial that we do everything we can to support our airline partners, so we brought this process forward.

“We have created an additional 10 dedicated parking zones to accommodate the increased demand, including runway 14/32, Taxiway Papa (the original decommissioned runway for BNE), the logistics apron and various other aprons that have been modified to accommodate additional aircraft.

“Alongside the provision of aircraft parking free of charge, we are working with the airlines to offer support on a case by case basis to assist when and where we can.

“Despite the challenges we’re all currently facing, we should remain confident that recovery will come and that we must be ready to not only return to normal, but to prosper.

“Brisbane Airport is confident and standing ready to support the many industries reliant on 24/7 connectivity across Australia and the globe.”

I am getting a bit confused as i keep seeing all these airlines are not suppose to be flying to BNE currently but they are.

EVA is in again today the 3rd time in a week.SQ 265 came in yesterday.Korean Air 787-9 landed earlier and also Emirates 77W also.

None of these 4 should be here but i guess they are carrying freight.

Skytraders have been in twice this week and Omni is showing all up 3 flights to BNE this week as well.

Solomons flew BNE-HIR-BNE yesterday.Air Kirabati flew to TRW for the first time 2 days ago.

There are still about 40 airlines flying to BNE still and today we have Townsville Airlines B1900.

Yesterday Seair Twin Otter did 2 flights.

The fifo business is busier than usual with Alliance very busy as well as Corporate Air,Hevilift,Skytrans and some REX flights.
Small carriers such as Machjet,GWA,and Austrek are doing flights as well.

BNE handled close to 270 movements yesterday with PER being the busiest capital city airport in Australia for movements with BNE 2nd.

SYD was 3rd.
