Regular feature of J* flights, although, not on all flights (I average about 10-15 per annum).

Has been a topic on the forum previously as well.

I'm pretty sure the PTU self tests with the start of the nbr 2 engine - so that being the case it would be on each flight - maybe a 320 pilot or engineer on the board can confirm.

i've never heard the PTU working when the cargo doors are used.
the yellow system elec. pump controls the forward and aft cargo doors , even if the elec. pump is de-energised, it will automatically come on when the cargo door lever is used.

A recent Air NZ flight has this noise going on for about 8 minutes while they run a "computer test" before takeoff. We were delayed for about an hour all up while they pilots struggled to let the computers say all was okay!

Yes, it does come from the bottom as it is an emergency exit. If I recall the 737 is the same, the reason being there is no room above the window for the shade to open into, so it goes down instead.
