Default Qantas warns LAX on lack of VLA gates

Quote:

04 August 2008

With the launch of its A380 service to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) from Melbourne set to begin on 20 October 2008, Qantas Airways has made it clear that it is opposed to using the remote gates at LAX for regularly scheduled aircraft that may not be able to be accommodated at the international terminal.

that sounds a heck of a lot like the oneworld slogan

aren't they the largest foreign carrier into LAX? at least they deserve some leverage / bargaining power if they've got the volumn of flights coming in.
Also no airlines like remote gates, neither do passengers (besides spotters or aviation enthusiasts I guess)

I was doing arrivals once at the international and on that day there were 3 UA flights coming into SYD (one of them a day late). One of them was parked at the remote gate and pax had to be bused in. A family with a member with crutches didn't want to wait and they put up with squeezing into the bus. By the time they reached the terminal they were pretty irate and yelling at the arrivals staff that offered them wheelchairs (and it wasn't even their fault).

If they (Qantas) are a customer paying good money and have a contract to provide a certain level of service then why can they not complain and threaten to take their business elsewhere? It isn't as if LAX is a monopoly, considering a large portion of customers on QF flights through connect to other parts of America which can be done at any large port.

surely they should have some bargaining chip, being the largest foreign carrier as per traffic stats of foreign carriers.

Up to DEC 2007 the top foreign carriers in terms of pax numbers at LAX were

Qantas in terms of pax numbers was the 10th biggest carrier (or largest international carrier) with 1 245 226 passengers.
2. Mexicana Airlines 1 150 040 passengers
3. Air Canada 1 011 130 passengers
4. Korean Air 670 461 passengers
5. Cathay Pacific 658 801 passengers

Where did you get those stats from, Malcolm?

I'm not disputing them, just want to look at them to compare some other airlines.
