It wasn't that long ago that I checked-in for an Air NZ flight to Auckland, and the lady suggested that my slightly oversized sports bag be carried on as cabin baggage as well as my backpack. When I told her it was a bit oversized, she said not to worry as it will scrunch up to the desired size if anyone questions it.
As I then wouldn't have to wait around for my bag at Auckland, this sounded like a good idea, however our friends(?) at customs xrayed the bag as usual and proceeded to chuck out any tube of anything whose full contents were over the required 100ml. this included a 3/4 used tube of toothpaste which was 110ml new, and a tube of sunscreen which was 150ml new.

Needless to say after purchasing these items at Auckland for use, I checked in the bag on the return flight.
