Yes that was a great read. As much as enjoy the details, it's hard to block out what the passengers and crew went through. Very sad.

It is interesting that other aircraft had gone around the storm and 447 did not. The text above suggests that the experienced pilot lead them to the storm then took of for a rest, robert discovered that the radar settings where incorrect and made the adjustments. So was the veteran pilot Marc dubois accountable also for piloting 447 into the storm that other aircraft had diverted around and leaving his juniors to manage the situation. It doesnt excuse the actions of he other pilots howevervdid they need to go through that? Just my thoughts after reading the details.

Quite a lenghty (3 part) story on sixty minutes last night, with alot of cockpit voice recordings shown, sadly right to the end of the flight.

Was a well structured segment, albeit I am not sure how they worked out Karl was the logical reporter.

The British guy was quite emotional at one stage about the real issue and as the story unfolded, you really can't blame him - it seems the reliance upon technology to do everything for us is catching up.

Hopefully there will be some rational thought in all quarters (manufacturers, airlines and regulators) about how much things can be "dumbed down" and at what cost when something goes wrong that requires application of the intellect and capability that we have come to expect.

Hoping for some balanced outcomes.

I found it interesting that the word "Airspeed" was not mentioned throughout the drama. Surely the combination of Airspeed and Artificial Horizon (electronic or backup analogue) would have been enough for the crew to take the correct recovery action. Crusing in the thirty thousands, and then climbing to FL400 (all be it an incorrect back stick response), gave them ample opportunity to evaluate all the instrumentation and take positive action (even without any reference to an horizon). A tragic outcome, and difficult to understand the actions of the crew.
