Bae-146 VH-NJA broken up in Adelaide
Quite a crowd at Adelaide today to see this former National Jet aircraft broken up by the scrap metal people.
The muncher took just over an hour to reduce it to small bits, the sound was sickening. It was c/n 4 and I remember when it once had the Qantas Link scheme.

Not much.... I know you can get $6000 for a DC-3 back when you got good prices for the metal.

I believe it was worth 20c per kg.
So around 5 tonnes would be worth about $1,000 Not much really I recently took some steel bars to my local scrap place and got 40 cents / kg.

Sarah C - please do not quote the post directly above your reply. It is not necessary - mod.

It has gone to where all Quadrapuffs belong. To the scrap dealers. They would be one of the worst aircraft to work on.

Although I missed the actual break-up of the airframe due to work commitments I did manage to shoot a few images of it's final flight, albeit on the back of a truck and with the help of a couple of cranes.
Cheers, David.M.

Nice pictures David, they removed alot from it including hold doors, slats stabilisers etc, seen a few of them get the chop here in MEL and didnt have as much as NJA had removed before scraping.
VH-TXH as you can see still had the forward doors. ZK-NZM Still had windows left in |

I know that the local South Australian Aviation Museum ( SAAM ) at Port Adelaide made various attempts to procure it.
Just retaining the nose section was mooted but no go. After lengthy discussions, the decision was made to scrap it. I reckon the costs ( 2 cranes, one muncher ) of breaking it up would have exceeded what it was worth. The bits and pieces were carted away next day to Sims Metal.
