Default Air NZ buys more Dreamliners

Quote:
Air New Zealand has ordered eight new Boeing 787-10 aircraft, to replace its aging fleet of Boeing 777-200s and potentially make it possible for the carrier to non-stop flights to New York.

The airline’s chief executive Christopher Luxon said the order was a "hugely important decision” for the carrier, with the first of the jets to arrive in 2022.

And unsurprisingly powered by GEnx-1B engines, not Rolls Royce.

well, if there was a pool on this i would have had 787-9. I'm surprised that the -10 won in a fleet where range is highly valued.

Perhaps Boeing have indicated a range boost is coming to the -10.

The 787-10 has a quoted range of 6,400 nautical miles. AKL - LAX is just a bit further than this at 6,504 and SFO 6,516 nm. A range boost would get the plane to LAX and SFO and make it a lot more versatile in the fleet.

Air NZ now fly to an increasing number of destinations in Asia with the 787-10 able to fly to all these cities, except for PEK which is 6,463 nm. The range boost could be utilised to there as well.
