PAL streamlines Australian operations

MANILA - Philippine Airlines (PAL) is realigning its Australian operations starting with the temporary suspension of flights to and from Brisbane effective October 31, 2010.

Consequently, the flag carrier’s five times a week flights to Melbourne will be adjusted to thrice weekly, while flights to Sydney – one of PAL’s most popular Australian destinations – remains unaffected with five times (5x) weekly services, PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said.

In a news release, Villaluna said the decision to temporarily halt Brisbane services was due to marketing considerations.

Passengers to be affected by the flight realignments shall be properly notified by
PAL’s contact center and advised on the best options to proceed to their respective destinations, she said.

Villaluna stressed that Australia remains an important market for Philippine Airlines. Recognizing the route’s growth potential, she reiterated PAL’s long-term commitment to the island-continent. She stressed, however, that market conditions and the onset of the lean season necessitated some changes in the number of destinations and frequency of flights the flag carrier mounts to Australia.

Philippine Tourism has expressed
its disappointment and surprise
at the decision of the country’s
flag carrier to axe flights from
Brisbane at the end of the month.
Consuelo Garcia Jones,
Australia and New Zealand
tourism attaché with the
Philippine department of tourism,
said the services may not have
been given sufficient time to bed
down.
Wholesaler All About Asia
echoed the comments.
“It’s a bit of a blow,” managing
director Robert Graham said.
Philippine Airlines announced
late last week it will axe the
Brisbane flights from October
31, only seven months after
launching the services, following
poor sales. Melbourne flights will
also be reduced from five to three
per week.
“It is disappointing. I don’t
feel they have given it enough
time but at the end of the day
it is a commercial decision for
Philippine Airlines,” Jones said.
But with increasing numbers
of wholesalers featuring the
Philippines, she added the
momentum building for the
destination should continue.
Graham estimated that 20%
of its Philippine sales were ex-
Brisbane with customers now
forced to travel via Sydney on the
carrier.
“We have been out there
marketing the Brisbane flights
and distributed flyers and
were starting to get a flow of
bookings,” he told Travel Today.
“It is disappointing. I don’t know
anyone who thinks the flights
have been given enough time.”

Philippines airlines will boost its frequencies to Australia next year from March 27.
The carrier will operate 7 days a week up from 5 now. Using A340-300s demand is strong from Melbourne and Sydney markets despite the airline suspending Brisbane flights earlier this year.

It seems now Australia will be all A343 operations by philippines starting March 2011.

Philippine Airlines as per 23DEC10 GDS timetable display further adjust planned Australia operation effective 27MAR11. Previously the airline planned to increase from 5 to 6 weekly, but it is now increasing to Daily. There is also routing change, with Manila – Melbourne – Sydney – Manila operating 4 weekly, opposite direction 3 weekly.

Service operates with Airbus A340-300 on Daily flight, meaning Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will not be operating to Australia (77W service to Vancouver, first appeared on this blog as exclusive on 09DEC10). Revised schedule as follows:

Stefan, I saw this had been bumped and thought that PAL had reversed their decision on BNE alas its just upgrade of existing services.
