Default Fire breaks out at Sydney Airport

Quote:
Two federal police officers have been rushed to hospital and others have been evacuated after a fire at Sydney Airport ruptured drums of a liquid chemical.

The fire in a storage shed has been contained, fire officers say.

A blaze broke out in the shed near a helicopter hanger on Ross Smith Avenue at Mascot about 6am (AEDT) on Wednesday, NSW Fire Brigades spokesman Craig Brierley said.

"The fire breached a number of drums of a chemical and as a result two AFP officers have been taken to hospital suffering the ill-effects of exposure," Mr Brierley said.

"We are looking at what the chemical is and how we can deal with it, but it is contained at this point and can't go anywhere."

An ambulance spokesman said the two Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers were taken to Prince of Wales Hospital suffering breathing difficulties, but were in a stable condition.

"Two other officers were treated at the scene but did not require transport (to hospital)," the spokesman said.

Twenty people from nearby hangers have been evacuated from the area while specialist firefighters in protective suits examine the scene.
