Default How one Ruins Something For All (CH9)

Yet another example of how one person can ruin thing for many. While attending our monthly union meeting a couple of days ago we were
informed that a passenger/passengers recently recorded the CH 9 audio from the cockpit on one of our flights and put it on U Tube etc. They then made the comment (and wrote to the company) describing how our crews missed two calls from ATC...the company has of course had to respond etc so now we have been advised that we may want to think twice before maike Ch 9 available. While its always been discretionary you will now find that it's pretty much going to be less and less available once this gets out to a wider dissemination. There has not been anything in writing from management regarding the incident but there was some pretty heated comments from many in attendance at the meeting. I will provide updated info if/when it becomes available. Not a very nice or smart thing to do folks

Agree Mike - there is always at least one person who abuses something positive for everyone else. I flew LAX/IAD/LAX with UA a few months ago and really enjoyed listening to Channel 9 for the first time in both directions. I hope that they don't end it because of one person.

Please excuse my naivety, but am I safe to assume that CH9 is a live broadcast of the radio communications between the cockpit and ATC?

If so what airlines have this feature?

This would be a great feature. Saves me having to worry about by batteries going flat on my receiver.

Yes Ahmet, United airlines has this feature on board. They maybe others as well which I am not sure of.

It is normal ATC communication from your Aircraft to ATC.
It is great to listen too. I had the chance to listen to it onboard a UA flight from CLT to ORD last July. Was a change from listening to ATC from the ground.

Wowww! I had no idea this channel existed, but maybe because it's not enabled. Does Qantas have something like this?

On topic, what sort of person would report such a thing - seriously? Maybe they thought they could do a better job.

Sort of on the same topic... is using a handheld scanner allowed on an aircraft? I can't see any problem, seeing as it's not transmitting anything...
