Default Seatbelt Sensors??

Is there such a thing as seat belt sensors?

I just landed at Orange County Airport on airTran and we are waiting for our gate.

Some people began taking their seatbelts off when the plane stopped in a taxiway and the flight crew said "our seatbelt indicators show we have 17 people who have unbuckled their seatbelts. Please fasten your seatbelts for your safety and the safety of those around you".

I'd never heard this before and checked the empty seatbelt on the seat next to me and couldn't see anything that resembled a sensor.

How does such a thing work?

I know of an American Eagle pilot who talks about various crews saying the same thing during taxi, sometimes they even call the cockpit and ask them to stop if pax stand up during taxi. Pretty smart, I'd like to see something similar here!

I think it was a bit of a furfy but I am surprised that it hasn't been developed somehow. I know refitting all the current aircraft would be impossible but surely it could be possible with the newer aircraft.

Possible but there is a flaw. Spare Seats. It may appear to the cabin crew that someone isn't buckling up but in true fact there is no one sitting there.

My car can tell if there is a person in the front passenger seat. If there is and the belt is not done up a warning light flashes and a chime sounds.

No person in the seat no light or sound.

Pretty certain it is for front passenger only.

Cheers

M

And if you place something with a bit of weight there and don't clip the seat belt it chimes too, right?

On a plane anything on a seat with a bit of weight has to be a passenger. Everything else has to be stowed for takeoff and landing.

So in this situation to put a $2 sensor in the buckle you also need to put a $15 scale and some wires to run from each seat to a central computer to process who is buckling up and who isn't. So this simple process of putting a sensor in the seatblet is around $20-$30 per seat. right?
