What: Flypast of Martin Place by an Air Force C-17A Globemaster transport, coinciding with a memorial service marking 76 years since the Battle of Britain

When: Thursday, 15 September 2016. The memorial service will commence at 11:00am, and the flypast will occur at 11.30am

Where: Martin Place Cenotaph, Sydney. The aircraft will approach the CBD from the heads, overflying Woolloomooloo and then the Cenotaph at an altitude of 300 metres, before circling around and departing the Harbour area towards the heads

This year marks the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and the Royal Australian Air Force Association (NSW Division) will hold its annual memorial for the anniversary at the Martin Place Cenotaph on Thursday, September 15.

The service will include a flypast by an Air Force C-17A Globemaster, a transport aircraft operated by No 36 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley in Brisbane’s west.

The battle officially lasted from July to October of 1940, and saw Royal Air Force defending Britain against airborne attacks from the German Luftwaffe. The RAF’s success in this campaign has been attributed by historians for preventing a follow-on invasion of England.

During the Battle of Britain, around 450 Australian pilots were serving with the Royal Air Force, with 32 Australians serving with Fighter Command. A total of 14 Australian pilots died as a result of combat during the Battle of Britain.

The RAAF’s own No 10 Squadron was attached to RAF Coastal Command, flying maritime patrol missions from Britain.
