Air Mauritius is to discontinue flights from Sydney as part of an operational review in response to the fuel crisis.

"In that context, we will now operate a direct flight to Melbourne and cease operations to Sydney from September 1. Capacity to the East Coast of Australia is therefore maintained and passengers from Melbourne will have an improved product. Melbourne will become our hub in the east coast of Australia and our arrangements with Virgin Blue and Qantas will allow passengers from all cities in Queensland, New South Wales (including Sydney) and South Australia to choose one of the many flights available to connect our direct flight from Melbourne.

"From December 15 to January 26, 2009, the flight will exceptionally be operated via Sydney in order to meet peak demand."

Interesting. You would think increasing services to PER and funneling all east coast passengers through on to PER-MRU services would make more sense than to maintain a 1 to 2 weekly MEL service. Then again MEL services could be in some way or form subsidised, one of MK's "prestige" routes or heck, it may even profitable!
