Default UA 870 Yesterday Tuesday

Anyone know why UA 870 was cancelled yesterday. UA website says just that "cancelled" and no more? Usually a pretty reliable service to SFO.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it as I don't know the turn around times but UA 840 was still at the gate when I departed to singapore at 7:30pm on Monday evening.

I was at the airport and saw alot of the pax coming back through arrivals.. There was a mechanical issue with the aircraft.
One of the pax said that they all went through to the gate, and then there were several announcements regarding parts coming from MEL, then staffing issues, then back to mechanical. Eventually at 5.30 they were told to go back through immigration/Customs and were put in hotels for the night, and people who had relatives in Sydney sent back to them...
WOuld be interesting to know the rego.. UA staff member who i spoke to(after she spoke to an "alcohol affected" pax) didn't know...

Pretty sure it was N181UA. Not 100% positive though?

Keiran. if you're talking about the flight that I was talking about (the delayed 840 service) then it was definately a United/Continental painted one.

Thanks for that, didn't actually see the plane, only the pax whilst waiting for the folks who were getting off EK 419...

I waited, waited and waited in the on-off sprinkles of showers, wondering where the 2nd United flight was that day. I did recall one being cancelled quite recently, but wasn't sure if this was the case again yesterday.

I do recall seeing two UA B744 birds on the tracker in the morning. So did the B744 actually stayed over night in Sydney? Would UA 870 be the flight that flies to MEL during the day as well? If so, maybe she was stuck in MEL?

I believe the cancelled flight would be a UA bird painted in their latest scheme.

The flight did not make it into Sydney for 0710 arrival, so would not have gone non op in Melbourne.

Had an email overnight from a reader saying UA863 (?) SFO-SYD which was due to depart on March 16 had taken off twice and had been forced to return twice.

Pax have been told wx radar problems. He said he was now booked to depart at 1100 on March 18, but it appears his email was sent after this time, so unable to determine whether it departed or not.

Said the new booking system was a mess too.
