At present there are no domestic bays on T2 at YSSY that can handle the B787, so I don't expect we'll see it here until it starts internatonal ops. Bay 49 is still B747 capable, so that may become an option in future. Alternatively, Bay 13 at T3 is already set up for B787 ops, so perhaps Qantas may come to the party if needed?

Let's hope not.

What stops a 787 from using another gate?

Size (for both length and wing tip clearance for other bays), no stop bar markings on the ground, aerobridge clearance from engines etc, NIG calibration, refuelling hydrant points can also come into play, equipment clearance and storage areas, pedestrian walkways etc.

In essence, the CADD department need to make sure they can meet all the required standards for use on any particular bay (this process gets done for all aircraft on all bays), and if restrictions are needed for that or adjacent bays, then they will be spelt out in the apron operating procedures.

Will Jetstar introduce any new routes with the 787? If so, where? If not, what current routes are they gonna increase capacity?
Or will Qantas be the ones making the new routes. Im aware all Jetstar A332's are going to Qantas once all the 787s are delivered, which hints what destinations will receive the 787. Yet again, will these A332's off to Qantas supply new routes?

It's been said that the B787's will replace the JQ A332's which, when sent to QF will replace the B763's.

I'd imagine that wherever the JQ A332's go now, the B787's will go in the future. Any route expansion will probably not happen until the A332 fleet has been replaced.

Only 10 A332's and 5 738's to replace 16 B763's means there won't be much, if any new flights anytime soon.

Yep, and they're replacing the last 5 734's.

Currently net fleet growth is pretty much zilch.

Not to mention the upcoming 744 retirements and the fact that once the A330's go in for their cabin refurb, they'll be at least 1 frame short for a year or so.

VH-XZI to VH-XZP.

That are essentially replacing the remaining 734's.

So really no new capacity at Qantas domestic, just JQ A330s's and new 738's to replace 763 and the 717's will see the end of the 734's.
