They've given almost 24 hours notice of a 30 min delay.

I can understand United informing their passengers via phone/email/sms of the delay, however its not a bad effort getting out the news to the general public so early in advance.

Well id say the 24hrs notice is because the flight is now cancelled according to Sydney airport website. If 839 is cancelled what aircraft went to Melbourne this morning because that was completed on time? Also united 870 i guess the other end of this flight is also cancelled tonight.

Actually, the flight details you posted are not the details of the flight in question. The flight details you posted is for the flight arriving tomorrow morning, not today.

Flight# UA9800 departed SYD for SFO today approx 12pm - worked by N179UA, which I believe is making up for yesterday's (24.6.09) UA870 SYD departure.

Today's UA839/840 between SYD and MEL is operated by N182UA

So at a guess did N173UA work UA863 into SYD this morning?

N121UA in its Star livery has been listed operating UA840 at some stage within the last 48 hours - however that could have been on the US domestic leg.
