It was Spotting Weekend 2003 ... and the video sent me heading to the archives.

These photos will bring back memories for some and be a touch of history for the newer board members.

You've seen the video, this was the crew.

The man himself .. even after five and a half years, I still miss Shep.

Great photos David, lots of memories as I can see my car and mates in the 4th photo (white Commodore wagon). Cargo pants were the go by the looks of it. The spotting weekends were always a great time to see the interstate guys and a few locals who weren't regulars.

I was one of the first spotters to meet Shep (late 90's) who at the time owned/ran a security company (an ex policeman, don't they all go that way?) and I was a courier at the time and would often park at the mound in between jobs. He would ask me about the different types of planes, where they were going etc. Great bloke.

Great photos David. Look at all that grass on the Mound!

To say Shep was a great bloke is a massive understatement, Peter. He did more for the spotting community than most newer spotters would ever know.

Back in those days I knew a lot or most of the regular spotters, and they'd always be happy to have a chat on the fence line. I even used to get permission to bring the odd one or two airside for a tour. I think Shep must have had nearly a dozen tours by the time he passed away, and sadly he never got to make the last 'scheduled' tour for the A380's first visit to Sydney.

Missed by all who knew him.

One of the last things Shep said to me when I visited him in hospital about a month or 2 before he passed away, "I'm not going anywhere, I've still got a lot of people to **** off yet".

Top bloke who is still missed a lot.

Mick

Exclamation In memoriam

It would be nice if we could get "Shep's Mound" signage installed, even something very modest, from our friends at SAC.

Also of note in those photos from Mr Ramsay is the late Dave Carey. Like Shep he was taken from us way too early. His presence at the spotting weekends was 'larger than life' and certainly made for some hilarious times.

I think this was the infamous Mosman RSL weekend....

We've observed many new members joining the forum over recent years. So speaking of Spotting Weekends, I guess if we can muster up an attendance similar to that of the 2003 one, it might be worth considering again for 2012, food for thought.

Good memories, Thanks all for that stroll down Amnesia Lane. One question though... What do you reckon that kid on the spotting platform wants to do when he grows up?
