Default Free Upgrade on BA

According to today's edition of the mX newspaper (a free afternoon newspaper handed out in CBD railway stations in Sydney, with similar editions in Melbourne and Brisbane), people who book flights on BA to Europe, Singapore, or Bangkok using their Mastercard will receive a free upgrade on one flight of their trip. This is valid for Sydney departures before 30 Nov, for bookings made before 15 July.

Can anyone confirm this, as it has not been advertised in any of the other newspapers?

I don't understand this promotion... isn't it just a mixed class airfare? Why does Mastercard need to attach its name to it?

An economy airfare on Qantas to London at that same time is $2276... or $1000 cheaper than what this promotion is offering... which means that you are ultimately paying for the "upgrade".
