Default Pilot too sick to land aircraft

Just heard this on the radio saw it on the ninemsn website

Quote:
A Qantas co-pilot was forced to declare an emergency when the captain fell ill on a flight from Adelaide to Perth.
A Qantas spokeswoman said the captain on flight QF593 became so sick he was unable to fly the plane about an hour before the scheduled landing on Friday morning.
She said the pilot had suffered a minor health problem during the flight and an ambulance was called to wait for his arrival at the Perth domestic airport.
"The first officer, or second in command, landed the aircraft without incident, which he is capable to do," the spokeswoman said on Friday.
Qantas said it was not technically an "emergency landing".
The plane had to be tugged off the runway and towed into the terminal.
The sick pilot was met by paramedics and taken to a Perth hospital by ambulance.
Qantas said the pilot's illness was not life threatening.
The flight was carrying 110 passengers.

A lot of older aircraft only have a tiller on the Captains side.

Yes must be the 737... only type in the QF fleet to have no tiller on the F/O side.

was it company policy that the FO could not jump into the captains seat and taxi the plane or would ops/management disallow it?

Except for the last batch ordered which come with the tiller on the FO's side, allowing them to feel like a real pilot.......even if they are only flying a bugsmasher!
