A PILOT has walked away with only minor injuries after his light plane crashed early today.

It was believed the plane caught fire after it crashed at Warnervale aerodrome about 7am (AEST) today, the New South Wales Ambulance Service said.

The crash comes after a man anf woman were seriously hurt when their ultralight plane clipped a fence and crashed on takeoff north of Newcastle yesterday afternoon.

The accident occurred on a property in Glen Oak.

"During take-off it is believed that the wheel of the plane struck the top of a fence and ploughed into the ground," a police spokesman said today.

The pilot, a 39-year-old man from Brandy Hill, was thrown from the aircraft and suffered a fractured shoulder and possible spinal injuries.

His passenger, a 48-year-old woman from Glen Oak, suffered severe facial injuries.

She was trapped in the damaged plane for some time.
