The source is probably the Australian Frequent Flyer forum which has been debating the supposed pull-out of Perth and elsewhere for weeks.

As part of the changes the group is consolidating its heavy maintenance bases from three down to two and is selling two of its seven catering centres.

Working through many smaller measures that will increase efficiency and productivity, such as using iPads to give pilots instant access to forms, manuals, flight plans and charts and save on the cost and weight of manuals inflight.

Guessing more details to come.

Seems as though the transition from the three to two (to one?) maintenance base is to commence shortly...

Qantas boosts Brisbane maintenance

QANTAS Airways will spend $30 million upgrading its Brisbane heavy maintenance facility.
The move suggests Brisbane remains the warm favourite to emerge as Qantas' sole heavy maintenance base, as the airline moves to consolidate its existing three facilities into one site.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce told guests at an Australian Institute of Company Directors lunch in Brisbane on Thursday modern aircraft required less work.

"With that in mind, we've already started on a process to consolidate our heavy maintenance facilities from three sites, to now two sites, to ultimately one site in Australia," Mr Joyce said in prepared remarks.

"We have no set time frame, but it's something that needs to happen.

"Brisbane is the obvious candidate to become our one heavy maintenance site, given the purpose-built hangars and modern equipment."

Built in 2004 with the assistance of the Queensland government, Brisbane is Qantas' newest heavy maintenance facility.

In May, Qantas announced that it was closing its heavy maintenance facility at Tullamarine, which the airline said would save between $70 million and $100 million a year but also result in a loss of 422 jobs.

Qantas' third heavy maintenance site was at Avalon Airport, just outside Geelong in Victoria.

A heavy maintenance check involves an aircraft being stripped down for inspection, including among other things having all seats and interiors removed, engines taken apart and systems thoroughly tested.

The process can take several weeks for one aircraft.

Mr Joyce said $30 million would be spent transforming an existing line maintenance hangar into a facility capable of supporting up to three lines of maintenance.

"This includes new aircraft docking systems, safety equipment, new hangar doors and improvements to the hangar exterior," Mr Joyce said.

Mr Joyce said the airline had started recruiting 30 apprentices in maintenance and engineering in Brisbane.

Why spend that much money when you have a perfect facility and sitting there at Melbourne and Sydney!

I suppose, its the newest, having being built in 2004, so updating infrastructure to withstand future growth... Re-aligning of assets, and being able to consolidate costs (lease out existing infrastructure to other operators maybe) at either SYD/AVV...(MEL is earmarked as being closed back in May)

Because the Queensland Government is probably paying for it all .They were jelaous that Melbourne was the aviation hub in Australia and made the statement many years ago they wanted to be the aerospace capital in Australia.
