Default SY - Approach / Director

Hi All,

On liveatc.net, i've once seen Approach covering for Director as well. Does anyone know if this is a norm and when they actually do it (apart from Curfew hours)?

Thanks
Arjun

Not the norm, but done in quiet periods eg 1530ish most days or Saturday evenings after 2000. Director is that bit of approach inside 25nm and below 6000ft.

Director opens when the inbound traffic volumes reach a level that APP can't manage alone. When volumes reduce again Director closes down and acft stay with App from the entry to the TMA at 45DME (45nm from the airport) until the handoff to Tower.

It all depends on the workload in the TMA. Sometimes two APP and two directors + the departure guys. At very quiet times one controller covers the whole TMA.

The App and Director controllers sit at one bank of screens a metre or two away from each other.

The very quiet times when one controller handles all TMA traffic is only on the night shift {doggo}normally from 1100pm till 0530am depending on traffic. This is done from the approach "side" of the TCU
