Let me see if I can explain the parking situation.
Rydges will validate your parking ticket saving you 50% BUT you must have been parked for 3 hours or more and the validation is on the full retail price only. We stayed here on Friday night and the parking was $112 but with validation, paid $56. We entered the carpark at 1430 and drove out around 0930 the next morning. Its not the hotel for people who want to be able to come and go and they please. Rydges website states you should keep an eye on parking specials. This would work if you can get a deal for less than $56 as they only validate off the full retail price. So if you get a deal for say $70 for the night, don't expect that you will get a 50% validation to $35. |

I hope I can answer your question. I addressed this in a post on the Spotting page here on the YSSY forum.
The Rydges viewing platform is now a part of the 'Cloud 9' bar on the roof of Rydges. You don't have to drink, you can just do some spotting. The "SydSquad" (on YouTube) do some live-streaming videos from time to time on that Rydges roof. The bar has two sections - indoors (with large floor-to-ceiling glass walls for uninterrupted viewing and spotting opportunities) plus an outside section. At night the bar is beautiful when its interior lights are dimmed and the twinkling neon on the airport runways is visible. The airport itself doesn't provide a viewing platform for spotters and photographers, and the highrise airport carparks are to some extent off-limits now. There are very few elevated vantage points for spotting. Most are are at 'ground level', like Tower Beach or Shep's Mound. That's why the Rydges rooftop is such a good option in good weather. Most people in the Cloud 9 bar are transit travellers staying at Rydges for a night, not local spotters, but you can usually have a yarn, a drink (or three) and talk about travel with them. I like the place. |
