Airfares in 1970
I was wondering if anyone can recall how much a return economy class airfare Sydney - London was in 1970?
Was there much price difference between the airlines, and was it possible to get special deals? Were there seasonal variations? Any information would be welcome. |

In 1972 I flew back to Uk with an organisation called the UK Family Reunion Club. The cost was just over$2000. The route was Phillipines Airline to Manila DC8. then KLM DC8 to Amsterdam and London. The return route was Sabena to Brussels then to Singapore and QANTAS 747 to Sydney. There was various stops on the way at such exotic places as Tehran, Bombay and Calcutta.

Flight Training is another interesting comparison, I was paying $12 per hour Dual at Illawarra Flying School for a Cessna 150 back in 1968. Now $244 Dual at Schofields Flying Club these days.

As I did Sydney to London in 1970, will try and find my old diary for the costs of flights taken, but then I only took flights between SYD-DPS & BKK-Calcutta, rest was by bus, train, boat and truck!

Grahame, In 1971, my PPL training with the Darwin Aero Club in a Victa Airtourer cost me $7 per hour solo, $9 dual. I was an airline traffic officer and my weekly wage was $47. Any Overtime was not paid.

Air Fares in 1970
I can remember that one QF Fare was AUD $700.oo RETURN and $420.oo ONE WAY. Sydney-London-Sydney.
Prior to that a lot of passengers flew normal fares to ports likes Singapore, Kuala Lumper etc and then special charter flights onwards to Europe. |
